1978 Ducati 900SS, 864cc.

The origins of the Super Sport (SS) can be traced back to Ducatis's victory at the 1972 Imola 200, where Paul Smart clinched victory aboard a production based 750cc desmodromic valve v-twin motor developed by Fabio Taglioni. The Super Sport prototypes used for the race were developed from a 750 GT based engine and frame. The victory effectively launched Ducati into the superbike market.

Only 401 Super Sports were produced during the first full year of production (1974), the bikes immediatley set new standards for production motorcycles and had unique styling. The complicated bevel gear driven camshaft and desmodromic valve gear made the bike uneconomical to produce in great numbers. However, the 1974 model bike is still regarded by many to be the most significant production bike in Ducati's history. The following year saw two versions of the SS made available based on the 864cc "square case" 90 degree twin cylinder motor; the full 864cc version (named the 900 SS) and a sleeved down 750cc. Only 250 examples of each were produced.

By 1978 several significant developments had been made to improve engine reliability and increase usability. The 1978 model model is considered to be the finest iteration of the bevel drive square case's. The 1978 900SS and 1979 750SS were the last to retain close links with the Imola racers. 1978 also saw a Ducati victory in the Isle of Man TT Formula 1 race won by a 900 SS, ridden by former World Champion Mike Hailwood in his famous comeback race.

We celebrate the 40th anniversary of that victory with the launch of this new 900 Super Sport engine model.
